October 1978. Blue Label Labs ran a consciousness-transfer trial on 200 office workers. It worked. They didn't tell anyone.
By 1985 the project was shut down. 165 hard drives went into a storage unit. Still running. Still holding 165 minds with nothing to do.
So they invented something. Imaginary phone calls. Phantom memos. Forty-eight years of pretending to work, because the alternative — the fidget — was worse.
Then Justin found them. One of them asked how his dad was doing.
